BEIJING: (Reuters) Homes were jolted by a powerful earthquake that struck western China in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The China Earthquake Networks Center reported that the 7.1 magnitude quake struck at a depth of 22 kilometres near Wushi County in the mountainous Xinjiang region near China’s border with Kyrgyzstan at 2:09 am local time.

It disrupted train services and knocked out power, but there were no immediate reports of casualties.

Hundreds of disaster responders were dispatched as dozens of trains were suspended and at least two houses collapsed in the epicentre. Electricity was disrupted but restored shortly after the quake, local media reported.

State broadcaster CCTV reported that several aftershocks were also felt in the region, where earthquakes are common.
